"DALTON, though now an antiquated Village, was once the most considerable Town in Furness: it is conveniently situated in a fine sporting Country, and is honoured with an annual Hunt by the Earl of Derby."
"St. Mary's Abbey is distant from Dalton aboout a Mile, and stands in the Middle of a Vale upon the River Skell, surrounded by high Hills covered with Wood; - a Situation perfectly favourable to the monastic Life; it was founded by Stephen Earl of Morton and Bulloigne, afterwards King of England, and was endowed with the Lordship of Furness, and many royal Privileges."
"Furness Abbey is surrounded with Beacons, supposed to be of great Antiquity. It is probable that on the Eminence seen in the annexed View, which is within a Mile of the Abbey, a Beacon might be placed to prevent Surprise, and give Notice of the Approach of an Enemy."

"DALTON, a parish and market-town in the hundred of Lonsdale, Lancaster, 4 miles from Ulverston, and 266½ from London; containing 214 houses and 1052 inhabitants, of whom 28 were returned as being employed in trade, &c. It is seated upon a lime-stone rock near the sea, at the side of a rich vale, near the spring-head of a small river, and is divided into four townships. On the west side of the market-place is an ancient castle or tower, ... About one mile south of the town lie the magnificent ruins of Furness abbey, ... The church is an ancient building, but very neat, ... The town being in an excellent sporting county, it is much resorted to during the summer. It has four grammar schools, and a monthly book club. Two miles to the eastward of Dalton are some extensive works for procuring iron ore; amongst which are found great quantities of haematites, called by the workmen kidney and steel ore. ... In 1774, in clearing a field belonging to Dalton hall, some remarkably old foundations were discovered. The market is on Saturdays, and the fairs on the 6th June and 23d October, for horses, horned cattle, &c. The living is a vicarage, value 17l. 6s. 8d. in the patronage of the king, as duke of Lancaster."

George Romney, born Dalton-in-Furness 1734, d.1802, was apprenticed to an itinerant
portrait painter, Steele, about 1753. In 1756 he married and set up as a painter on
his own account. In 1761 he moved to London, leaving his wife with some savings. He
became popular; his 'Death of General Wolfe' winning 2nd prize at the Society of Arts,
1766; and he prospered. In 1799 he returned to Kendal where his wife nursed him for
the last three years of his life.
