Until the railway came this was little more than a village. In the 1850s the general
manager of the railway, James Ramsden, and chairman, the Duke of Devonshire, local
landowner, cooperated to develop the town. It became known as the Chicago of the North.
A new town; wide streets, houses, church, town hall, market, gas works, waterworks,
school, extensive quays, ironworks, steelworks, rolling mills, jute factory, shipyard,
... By 1865 the population was 8000. Al this was outside the statutory powers of the
railway!
