Notice the engineering skill by which the 7 miles of almost level line from Blea Moor
to Garsdale are set out, running on the contour of one valley then another at about
1110 feet altitude. This necessitated two large viaducts and two tunnels, but speed
on this line was important, it was the Midland's mainline route from London to Scotland.

James Allport and the Chief Engineer, John Crossley, made a preliminary survey of
the route on foot, walking over the moors from Settle mosts of the way to Carlisle,
in 1865.
