hearsay:-
The station dealt with many pilot engines used to double head trains. There was a turntable to turn these to run home light, and one windy night, the early hours of 21 December 1900, the wind caught a locomotive and span it round for several hours until someone had the idea of pouring cinders and sand into the well to bring things to a stop. After that the turntable was provided with a wind fence of old sleepers!
To Mr Bilcock, Inspector:-
"... As the Pilot Engine No. 1310 was turning on the Turntable this morning the Wind being so Strong the engine got beyond control ..."
