hearsay:- |
Wet weather causing floods had closed the railway across Blea Moor, but the 4.26pm
down train from Carlisle to Leeds, set off from Kirkby Stephen after the situation
had been assessed, to go as far as Ribblehead, 31 January 1995. The train was a class
156 two car dmu. Running at about 60mph, in rain in the dark, it ran into landslide
near Ais Gill, about 6.46pm. The train was derailed and blocked the up line Although
various procedures were followed to protect all trains, the following 5.45 down train
ran into the derailed train, only 6 or 7 minutes after the initial accident. |
|
It took nearly three years for the accident report to arrive, late 1997. The fault
was in the procedures followed for protecting the train after the accident. |
