The iron gratings on the airshafts seem to have been replaced fairly recently.

hearsay:-
2629 yards long. Built 1870-75.
While the cutting at the north portal was being excavated there was a cloudburst in the hills. Without warning a wave of water 5 feet high came off the fell into the cutting, drowning two of the seven men who were working there. A horse and wagon taking spoil out was swept away and buried beneath hundreds of tons of debris from the mountain side. The rain recorded in Dentdale was 2.5 inches in ¾hour.
