The Carlisle and Silloth Bay Railway was allowed to purchase 15 acres of land for
extraordinary purposes, which did not include property development. In the 1850s-60s
it bought 210 acres, and developed a resort; streets, gardens, hotel, gas works, sewage
system, baths, bathing machines, and the company even provided a policemen. Plots
were leased for building, and the company built some houses itself. |
