notes:- |
Following the trail on Longstone Common, by the River Clough, you can see the line
of the Dent Fault by the edge of the river. On this fault the older rocks of the Howgills
have been forced up above the younger limestone rocks of the Yorkshire Dales. |
The Dent Fault was first recognized by Adam Sedgwick. |
Unfortunately, without more clues we don't know what we're looking at. |
observation:- |
For a second visit we purchased a trail leafelt from the Sedbergh Tourist Information
office. The price, L1.50, is not an encouragement to buy - especially as most nature
trails are a waste of time. Hopefully a geological trail doesn't suffer from features
that are never where you are told you will see them. |
This leaflet is helpful. |
You are warned that the trail is difficult in places; good footwear, good balance,
and common sense are necessities. To see all there is to see you will have to clamber
onto mossy, slippery, damp rocks by the deep flowing river. |
