Chert is found here as a layer, or in nodules. It is a variety of chalcedony; hard,
compact silica probably formed by deposition of silica on the sea floor. Chert is
used for knife edges in balances. Other varieties of chalcedony are regarded as semiprecious
gems, like carnelian. |
