The original proposals for the Kendal and Windermere Railway in the 1840s continued at least as far as Low Wood on the way to Ambleside, but this extension was dropped from the plans.
A branch extending the Kendal and Windermere Railway to Ambleside was proposed 1886; it failed. The idea was tried again by the British Electric Traction Co, 1899, under the Light Railways Act 1896, a 3 feet 6 inch narrow gauge electric tramway; nothing happened.
The route was from Windermere to Ambleside, Lakes, Cumbria.
At some date there were plans for the railway to go from Windermere through Ambleside, Grasmere, and Wythburn, to Keswick.
