Kendal Chronicle, 28 June 1823:-
TO THE EDITOR OF THE CHRONICLE.
In reading Mr. Hodgson's address in your paper of last week,
it gave me much pleasure to see that he fully contradicted
the report of his having intended to relinquish his
undertaking in favour of other persons. The motives of those
who circulated such a report, are obvious; and it is by no
means honourable to the parties from whom it emanated. As a
subscriber, to Mr. Hodgson's map, I feel an interest, not
only in its completion, but that it be executed in a
superior manner. A plan projected from actual mensuration by
the chain, must always leave far behind the productions of
any eye-draft system, whatever may be its title;- and the
work to which the attention of an individual is solely
devoted, may fairly be presumed to excel that which is
merely of a general and a wholesale series of publications.
A SUBSCRIBER,
To Hodgson's Map of Westmorland.
