Page 71:-  "... the new red-stone church of St. John, with its spire, and the school houses and pretty parsonage at hand. These were built by the late John Marshall, of Hallsteads,- a name which is more spoiled than dignified by any conventional addition. The church and parsonage were occupied by the husband of one of his daughters; and now heand (sic) his son-in-law lie buried there together. ..."

"1838 by Salvin, enlarged 1862 and 1880's but re-using Salvin windows. Red sandstone, late C13 style with lancets and Geometrical tracery. Octagonal vestry with broach roof. Commanding west tower and spire. Interior broad and squat, with broad pointed arched panelled ceiling to nave. Stained glass by Holiday."

The church was built in the 1830s, architect Anthony Salvin, and consecrated in 1838. It was enlarged in 1863 and a north aisle added; a south aisle was added in 1889.
