Gentleman's Magazine 1805 p.1123  "..."
"As we crossed the rapid tide of the river Greeta, we observed, at the distance of a stone's throw from the road, an old embattled brick mansion, apparently an uninhabited ruin; in this however we were mistaken; it was the Villa Lucretilis of one among the celebrated of that Corpusculum Poetarum, who, it cannot be denied, have afforded abundant specimens of the exuberance of genius. His lyric brother occupies a cottage on the banks of Grasmere, for which, as his landord assured us, he pays an annual rent of 5l. - Sic itur as astra! ..."

hearsay:-
It was, at one time or another, the home of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Robert Southey.
Charles and Mary Lamb stayed here with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 1802.

hearsay:-
There are memorial tablets either side of the main door, which were unveiled by Nicholas Coleridge and Mrs Southey John, at the Southey Centenary Celebrations, 14 August 1943.

notes:-
Samuel Taylor Coleridge remarked on the view:-
"My God, what a scene! Right before me is a camp of single mountains - each in shape resembles a giant's tent, - and to the left, but closer to it far than the Bassenthwaite Water to my right, is the Lake of Keswick, with its islands and its white sails and glossy lights of evening - crowned with green meadows; but the three remaining sides are encircled by the most fantastic mountains that ever earthquakes made in sport, as fantastic as if Nature had laughed herself into the convulsion in which they were made."
