source data:- | courtesy of English Heritage "Industrial Arts and Crafts Centre. 1893, architect unknown. Snecked stone with Westmorland slate roofs. L-shape plan, local vernacular style. 2 storeys with attic storey to front elevation and single storey workshops attached at the rear. Main entrance bay 3 of the first floor reached by attached spiral stair leading to 4-bay plain wooden verandah. Front facade has painted wooden inscription above (altered) 3-bay window at ground floor reading: 'The loving eye and patient hand, shall work with joy and bless the land'. 1st floor has 2 32-pane windows and half-glazed door set back at verandah level with long roof dormer above. Facade completed by 2 storey gable fronted end, with 2 windows at ground level and a canted bay window on brackets above. The front gable, side gable and double rear gables all hung with Westmorland slates to base of roof line. Rear elevation of 2 storeys has 6-light, canted, 2nd floor bay window. Interior not inspected." "Included for historical association with the founder. Canon Rawnsley, patron of Beatrix Potter and founder of the National Trust, who established Keswick Industrial Arts in 1883." |
