Standard lock design with recesses for 2 pairs of lock gates, now missing, to take vessels of up to 100 tons: gave access from harbours to canal basin. Wall of lock to east continues at right angles to form a wharf. In use until 1853 when the canal was drained and part of the bed of the canal was used for the Port Carlisle Railway." |
