Gilsland lies across two counties, three parishes, and a couple of Parliamentry divisions.
In the village are the House of Meg, Merrilies Cottage, and Dinmont House, Meg Merrilies and Dandie Dinmont, were characters written by Sir Walter Scott, who visited here several times.
