 Built 1600s as the Dove and Olive Bough Inn, called Townend by the Wordsworths. William Wordsworth rented it from 1799 to 1808, and his three children were born here. Afterwards it was rented by Thomas de Quincey.
Rev Stopford A Brooke started, 1890, the movement which acquired the cottage for the nation.
