A wagon of a munitions train from Bootle Ammunition Factory caught fire just outside
the station, 22 March 1945. The fireman, George Stubbs, uncoupled a burning wagon
but when it blew up the driver was killed. George Stubbs also saved an oncoming passenger
train from harm. He was awarded the George Medal for gallantry. |
