war, it was certainly used in close fight, for no man would
throw a thing into a hostile crowd, the loss of which could
only be repaired with very great labour. If we imagine it to
have been used against wild animals, there is not the same
obbjection against its having been a missive weapon. Lastly,
we may reasonably enough conjecture, that it was employed by
the Druids, in their sacrifices, for slaying the victims.
