The best way for a carriage to Scale Hill or Buttermere, is by the old road towards Cockermouth over the steep mountain Whinlatter, which in the length of two miles rises to the height of 800 feet above the valley. After passing the sixth milestone, a road turns to the left, crossing a brook and winding round the end of a hill, where a fine view is presented over the cultivated vale of Lorton, and as far as the distant mountains of Kirkcudbright.

  Newlands Hause

At Scale Hill, a boat may be taken on Crummock Lake, from whence the mountains surrounding that and Buttermere, may be seen to great advantage. The party may be landed for a view of Scale Force, and again for a walk to the village of Buttermere, and a view of the lake from a hill near it - returning the same way to Keswick. But should there be any objection to taking a boat, the carriage may be driven along the side of Crummock Lake, to the inn at Buttermere, and the return made through the vale of Newlands. The road over the hause is very steep, rising to the height of 760 feet in less than a mile and a half; and for a short distance on the other side descending very rapidly: but, with steady horses, it is quite practicable.
