Map, hand coloured engraving, A New Map of Cumberland, 1824, scale about 3.5 miles to 1 inch, published by John Cary, 86 St James's Street, London, 1829.
The map was used by John Cary for William Smith's geological map, 1824; the explanatory text for the geology remains on the map, but the geological areas are not coloured. Around the map are plain cartouches for the geological tint, left uncoloured, with an explanation, eg - [ ] 33 Grey Slate of Buttermire and Borrowdale, associated with Hornstone, amydaloid & argillaceous Porphyry Characterized by bold towering Crags. Produces Copper and Lead Ore.
There is a vignette of The Citadel, Carlisle.
