WESTMORELAND RAILWAYS, 1860s
The particular interest in this map is in the railways depicted.

railways The railways are added: partly by engraving new lines on the plate, a bold line; but partly by a double line with cross ties, perhaps indicating a line in progrees or just being thought about:-
Lancaster and Carlisle Railway Authorised 1844; opened 1845; labelled:-
Carlisle and Lancaster Railway
Bold line.
Kendal and Windermere Railway Authorised 1845; opened 1847.
Bold line; runs to the lake shore.
Low Gill and Ingleton Railway Opened 1859?
Double line with cross ties.
South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway Authorised 1857; opened 1861.
Double line with cross ties.
Eden Valley Railway Authorised 1858; opened 1862.
Double line with cross ties; continues down the Mallerstang Valley.
Settle and Carlisle Railway Authorised 1866, opened 1866.
Double line with cross ties; only the Mallerstang part is shown. It is drawn as a continuation of the Eden Valley Railway, perhaps not the Settle and Carlisle?
Ambleside branch railway Double line with cross ties; it is possible to see how an earlier edition showing this as a continuation of the Kendal and Windermere line has been altered. This line never happened.
The railway additions suggest a date for the map in the late 1860s?
