roads
distances from London
The great roads are drawn by a double line, radiating out from London. The routes relevant to Westmorland and Cumberland are:-
from London; through Lancaster, Lancashire; then Boulton [Burton], Kendal, Westmorland; Penrith, Carlisle, Cumberland; and north east along the border with Scotland to Barwick, Northumberland.
The companion map of cross roads has roads drawn by a double line. For Cumberland these are:-
from Carlisle through Brakenhill, Cumberland; along the scottish border through Jedburgh etc; to Barwick, Northumberland. (also shown as a great road?)
from Tinmouth through Newcastle, Hexham, Northumberland; then Corby to Carlisle, Cumberland.
Whilst the map of the great roads gives a sensible overview of routes from London, it needs the cross roads to make proper sense. The map of cross roads is unhelpful by itself, and needs the great roads to make any good sense.
There is a table of distances on the left side of each map. On the great road sheet these are:-
Distances of each CITY and County Town from LONDON.
in measured miles and computed miles. The entries for Cumbria are:-
301 / Carlisle / 235
256 / Kendal / 203
From these two figures (just these pairs) it seems that a computed mile is 1 1/4 measured miles. It is not stated what either measure is, but do remember that an Old English Mile is about 1 1/4 statute miles.
The cross road sheet has:-
The Distances of ye Principal Cities and Towns on the Cross Roads from each other:
for Cumbria:-
80 / Carlisle to Barwick on Tweed / 55
69 / Tinmouth to Carlisle / 50
