Winander Meer (at 12) Is reckoned the largest Lake in
England & affords great plenty of Fish.
|
|
Keswick (at 29) Was formerly a Town of note, It's Saturday
Mt. was procured for it of K. Ed. 1st. by Thos. of
Derwent-water then Ld. of it, from whom it Haereditarily
descended to the Radcliffs. This place has been for many
ages famous for its Mines & the Miners have a convenient
Smelling House by ye Darwent Side, which they mannage so
ingeniously by its forcible Stream as to make it serve for
Bellows, Hammers, & Forge, & also for Sawing Boards, to the
great admiration of the curious Spectator. Sr. Ino. Banks
Knt. Attorney General to K. Chast. a Native of this Town
erected a Workhouse here for employing the Poor of this & ye
Parish of Crosthwate.

Dunmail Raise Stones Are supposed to have been erected by
Dunmail K. of Cumberland for ye bounds of his Kingdom. (at
20)

Ambleside (at 13) Conjectured by some to be ye Amblogand of
ye Romans, from ye Ruins of an old Roman Fortification &
Coyns &. has a Mt. on Wedn. well stored wth. Provisions.

Kendal So called from its scituation on Kan or Kant Flu. Is
a large Town well built & populous, driving a considerable
Trade in the Woollen Manufacture. It had formerly a strong
Castle, ye Walls of which are partly yet standing, & has now
a large Church & abt. 12 Chappels of ease. It was made a
Corp. by Qu. Eliz. [ ] Rn~i & afterwds. by K. Ia. 1st. [ ]
Rn~i consisting of a Mayor, 12 Ald, 12 Comon Councilmn, a
Recordr, &c. Here is a good Freeschool well endowed with
Exhibitions to Queens Coll. Oxon. Mt. Sat. Fairs Apr. 25th.
& Oct. 28th. & between ye said Fairs a great Mt. for Cattle
once a Fortnight.
