descriptive text:- |
"An ancestor of the Mounseys of Goldrill Cottage acquired the title of Kings of Patterdale,
from having successfully repulsed a body of Scottish moss-troopers at this place [Stybarrow
Crag], with the aid of a few villagers. His palatial residence was at that time Patterdale
Hall; but a few years ago the patrimonial estate was sold to Mr. Marshall of Leeds." |

Black 1846 |
||
|
||
hearsay:- |
Another version of the tale of Stybarrow Crag is that John Mounsey led his men to
the crag where raiders from Scotland were expected to come. Having seen to the deployment
of his men he declared:- |
|
"I'm a bit lame lads, I'm gan yam" |
||
But they won anyway. |
