The town hall clock is a flat bed turret clock movement installed by John Smith and
Sons, Midland Steam Clock Works, Derby, 1896. It has a six legged gravity escapement. |

The clock actuates a music barrel which plays the carillion in the tower. The bells
are mounted in a vertical frame; suspended for chiming, not on wheels for ringing.
The music barrel was fitted in the 1890s? A hand chiming frame is still in place,
but no longer connected to the bells. |

The bright blue electric motors for winding the clock, and for running the music barrel
were fitted recently by W Potts and Sons, Leeds. |
