From a temporary interchange with the A6 near Hackthorpe, to a temporary interchange near Catterlen, connecting to the A6 a little to the east. The latter became M6 junction 41. The M6, Westmorland and M6, Penrith to Carlisle motorways were not yet built. A bypass for Penrith was urgently needed. Started 1 November 1966; opened 7 November 1968.
