From a review of The History and Antiquities of Carlisle:-  ""The Market-place was disfigured and rendered incommodious by the Guard-house and the Shambles. The latter were private property, built of wood, and covered with slates of different kinds, which gave them an unsightly and grotesque appearance. ... The Shambles and ... were taken down about the year 1790; the (former) having been purchased, at a great price, by the corporation; ..."
