Newcastle Courant, March 1827, an advertisment for:-

"[a plate to the full value of ~5" and other prizes to be run for at Kirkby Lonsdale
by any horse, mare or gelding ... All horses, etc., to be kept in some public inn
in the said town, from the time of Entrance till the time of running]"

The obituary of jockey John Singleton, who died in Chester Workhouse, in the Sporting
Magazine, 1825, mentioned that he was the son of horse dealer, born Kendal, 1732;
at age 16, that is 1748, he rode in his first race at Kirkby Lonsdale.
