On the A591. The box site, on the main road and at the foot of a public footpath, would have ensured use by passing travellers as well as by residents. People who have stayed at the hotel include Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1885 and E.M. Forster in 1907.
The box would have been installed after 1871. It is not possible to give an exact identification for this box, since no maker's name is visible. It may be the WB83/2, which would bear the incuse name "Bernd. P. Walker, Eagle Foundry, Birmingham" - other boxes of this type have a raised maker's name which would not be so easily obliterated.
