An Edwardian box set into a stone wall between Bank Ground Farm and the large Lane
Head house, now an outdoor centre. There is a spectacular view across Coniston Water
towards the Old Man. When we visited this box towards the end of 1999 it looked rather
neglected, with the paint having faded to pink. |

This location has many literary associations. Lane Head was the home of the writer,
archaeologist and artist W.G. Collingwood, who was secretary to John Ruskin during
the last twenty years of Ruskin's life. Brantwood, Ruskin's home from 1872 until his
death in 1900, is only a mile further along the lake. A frequent visitor to Lane Head
between 1903 and1913 was Arthur Ransome, who was a friend of the family. |
