hearsay:- |
Part of the property that Bisop Watson bought in Ambleside was an inn, The Old Cock.
The innkeeper, to honour his new patron, renamed his house The Bishop, removed the
old sign and had a new sign with a likeness of the Bishop Watson, in shovel hat and
episcopal wig. Meanwhile a new inn was begun across the street, which decided it would
be The Old Cock, attracting some of his neighbours trade. The innkeeper of The Bishop
then hoisted an extra sign beneath the portrait of the bishop, declaring 'This is
The Real Old Cock'. |
