hearsay:-
|
Carlisle City Police installed 28 street pillars in 1941. These were cast iron pillars
with a telephone in a box at the top. On top was an orange light, which flashed to
catch the attention of a patrolling constable. He could telephone in for messages,
and make notes in his pocket book resting on a dropdown desk on the pillar.. He could
make a call himself, and so could a member of the public. More were installed later;
and all were removed in 1962.
