| hearsay:- |
Monks of the Cistercian Oder at Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire, obtained lands here, including
Stonethwaite Farm, about 1195-1211. This developed into a successful dairy farm. the
monks of Furness Abbey challenged the arrangement. After a long legal argument the
issue was resolved by Edward I, who confiscated the farm, 1304; and promptly sold
it back to Fountains Abbey. |
