"Roadside headstone. Calciferous sandstone slab with rounded top inscribed JOSEPH THOMPSON MAY HERE BE FOUND, WHO WOULD NOT LY IN CONSECRATED GROUND, DIED MAY YE 31 1745, AGED 63 WHEN HE WAS ALIVE. After an argument with the Vicar of Harrington Church, Thompson vowed never to set foot in the church again and on his death-bed requested to be buried at midnight in the middle of Scaw Moor. When the land was enclosed and the headstone proved an obstacle, it was moved to its present roadside position. See William Whellan, History of Cumberland &Westmorland, 1860, 483."
