"School. Dated 1818, with inscription, on slate tablet over porch: NATIONAL SCHOOL FOR BOYS. Built by public subscription and munificently endowed by Matthew Pyper, of Whitehaven, Esquire. Later additions and alterations. Coursed, squared rubble, with quoins, on plinth. Graduated slate roof with projecting eaves; stone chimney to south end. Single, tall, storey; 12 bays Entrance in gabled porch to south gable end: Plank double door in elliptical-headed surround with impost band; semicircular- headed window in recessed surround to either side. Windows to east and west elevations all tall, with glazing bars; most segment-headed. All glazing C20 replacement."
