The Postman Pat stories were conceived after teacher John Cunliffe called in at Beast
Bank Post Office, Kendal, in the 1970s. John Cunliffe called in and chatted to the
post master, Jim, at that time, for background ideas. The post office closed 19 June
2003. |

The Postman Pat stories first appeared on television, 1978. They were issued as books
from 1981, the first being:- |

Many of the incidents in Greendale, of the Postman Pat stories are said to have been
inspired by the valley of Longsleddale. |
