notes:- |
The stone is dolerite, an intrusion of igneous rock. It has been slightly metamorphosed
by later pressure and consequent heating during the mountain building of the Silurian
period; ie it is a metadolerite. There are crystals of pyroxene - black, plagioclase
- white, altered to chlorite - greenish. Nearer the centre of the intrusion where
cooling was slower the crystals are larger, easier to see. The cooling has left some
columnar jointing with a hexagonal cross-section. |

NB: beware my amateur geological knowledge. |
