hearsay:- |
The bridge connects the village to the burial ground. When it was built, by the railway
company, no one knew what to call it. It was decided to call it after the first person
to be carried over it to the graveyard. This was Joseph Parkin, died 1800. He had
a reputation as a miser. |

notes:- |
The bridge was washed away when the River Derwent flooded, 2009. This cut off access
to the church, causing distress to people with relatives buried in the grave yard.
No grant aid was available to make good the damage, nor would the local authority
reinstate the byeway. The landowner and local people, bulldozer from here, lorries
from there, labour etc, did it themselves - and then got complaints from an officious
planning officer. Friends on the planning committee saw off this morning. There is
now an embankment joining up the tracks. |
