The well is a memorial to Dorothy daughter of Rev Christain, vicar of Crosthwaite 1728-58. He made the memorial from an existing water trough. Dorothy, an invalid, used to watch the horses from her cottage window. (Rev Christain was uncle to Fletcher Christain.)
