notes:-
There was at Lorton a chapel of ease to Brigham mentioned in the pipe rolls 1198; the site is not known. The earliest mention of the dedication to St Cuthbert is in 1416. A visitation in 1698 reports the chapel in good repair, though a year later it was not as good as they had thought. This was dealt with by 1711 when the churchwardens reported that the church was:-
"... in good and sufficient repair within and without, flag'd plain and even, ..."
By 1802 it was in a dangerous state, though it continued in use. By 1809 a new church had been built. The present chancel was added between 1869 and 1903; the chancel was improved in 1911; there was a restoration project from 1987 to 1993. Lorton became a parish in 1884.
