hearsay:- |
The Furness Railway thought to develop surplus land here, planning a hotel, avenues
of detached and semi-detached houses, and a promenade, 1879. Hardly anything was built.
By 1900 there was a golf course. |
|||||||||||||||
You could hire a bathing machine or deck chairs, buy ice cream, have a donkey ride,
buy buckets and spades, ... |
||||||||||||||||
In 1897 the Furness Railway was asked to stop sending excursion trains because they
brought |
||||||||||||||||
"a class of people who by their language and manners drive the visitors from the beach
and to the streets" |
||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||
hearsay:- |
There is a cannon on a plinth overlooking the beach. During World War I it was covered
up so that the enemy didn't think the town was fortified, and worth bombarding. The
present cannon was placed there in 1998; the original cannon was melted down for its
metal during World War II. |
