Thomas de Quincey, writer, was also a journalist and then editor of the Westmorland
Gazetter. When living at Dove Cottage he visited here, and fell in love with the farmer's
daughter, Margaret Simpson. They had a child in November 1816, and married at Grasmere
church, February 1817. In 1829 de Quincey became the owner of Nab Cottage; there was
a complicated mortgage and he sold the farm in 1833. |
