hearsay:- |
On occasion a cloud is seen lying on the fell top, and above it, a space in between,
a dark band of swirling cloud; these are the Helm Cloud and Helm Bar, precursors of
a Helm Wind. This enormous wind comes off the fell into the Eden Valley, sometimes
with the force of a hurricane, and from it came the reputation of Fiends Fell as an
evil place. |
|
A missionary from Canterbury climbed the fell to exorcise the evil, and erected a
cross on the fell top, renaming it Cross Fell. The cross is now gone; the wind still
blows. |
