source data:-   The Old Cross used to stand on the common before enclosure, 1859. It was moved for safety to a railed in area in the park at Doveby Hall.
There is a tradition that markets were held by the cross in the time of the Plague. 
Dovenby manor book mentions the Old Thorn Cross on the moor, 1690.
