Preface
BRITISH RAINFALL, 1867.
Through the continued courtesy of more than a thousand
correspondents, I have the pleasure of issuing the Eighth
Annual Statement of Rainfall in the Biritsh Isles, that for
the year 1867. While conscious that in accuracy and
completeness with reference to last year it is fully equal
to any of its successors, I trust the essays in the earlier
part of the volume will prove equally acceptable.
The publication is a few days later than usual for three
causes - (1) the tardiness of a few of my
correspondents; (2) the difficulty of getting communications
from the lesser Islands of the Hebrides and Shetlands during
the winter months; (3)owing to the increased number of
returns, more time is required for their verification and
for their careful reading against the proof-sheets. As I
have stated in previous years, the tables are not only read
against the MS. in the usual way, but also against the
observers' returns, hence the remarkably small list of
errata on the opposite page.
