Coal Mine Fire,
Whitehaven
Whitehaven, in Cumberland. One of the coalpits
belonging to Sir James Lowther near this place, being
set on fire by the carelessness of a boy, it burnt with
great fury, and communicating itself to 6 pits, was become a
very shocking scene, prodigious quantites of smoak, earth,
pieces of timber, and materials used in the work, being
continually thrown out, with an inconceivable noise, and
shaking of the earth, so that the inhabitants were in fear
for their houses.
