Mercy
Misericords are the hinged seats found in choir stalls of medieval churches which tip up to allow the monks to stand. On the underside of the seat is a small wooden support on which to rest, on the underside of this is often a carved image.

The Latin word 'misericordia' means mercy. In the day the monks celebrated 8 services; Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline; besides other masses and prayers, all said while standing. The small support gave them some mercy from standing for many hours. The carvings on the wooden support are often secular or pagan, and sometimes at odds with Christian piety.
Misericord numbering within a church follows a convention - N S for North and South side of the choir, numbered from 1 nearest the altar.
