Coats of Arms
Armory

Heraldry began formally in England as means of identifying men whose features were hidden in armour, and of identifying their supporters on a battle field, from the 12th century.

image BLX55.jpg

In 1483 the College of Arms became the controlling authority under the Earl Marshall, which is a hereditary title of the Duke of Norfolk. The college officers are:-

3 Kings of Arms; Garter, Clarenceux, and Norroy.

6 Heralds; Chester, Lancaster, Somerset, Richmond, Windsor, and York.

4 Pursuivants; Rouge Croix, Rouge Dragon, Portcullis, and Blue Mantle.

Arms are defined by a blazon, a formal description in simple if unfamiliar language, brief, precise and unambiguous. The conventions for blazon are clearly described in Friar 1987. A grant of arms is made in a letter patent, a formal document addressed to the public.

In the Old Cumbria Gazetteer, coats of arms are recorded from memorials, monuments, gravestones, hatchments, and stained glass in churches, on innsigns, buildings, roadsigns, etc.

Ogilby 1675 Britannia
example symbol on
map
On the left of the scene is a city, a battlemented and decorated town gate fortified with cannons, lots of them. Above there is a flag with the royal arms. This royal standard is blowing left of the flagpole, for good design reasons no doubt, but the arms are shown the right way round. As the flag is viewed from the back the arms should be backtofront, which would be unacceptable.
The blazon is, forgive inadequacies in my use of the jargon:-
quarterly 1 and 4 quarterly i and iv azure three fleur de lys or for France, ii and iii or three lions passant guardant gules for England, 2 or a lion rampant gules within a double tressure flory counterflory gules for Scotland, 3 azure a harp argent for Ireland.
The royal banner of the Stuart kings. The particular colours used are those of a modern colourist. There are no colour letters in the engraving, nor shadings to indicate colours.
example symbol on
map
Just below the balustrade of the gate tower is a coat of arms in an oval scroll cartouche, carved in the stonework. This repeats the royal arms. There is a rose for England to its left, a thistle for Scotland to its right. Lower, in the arch of the gateway is another oval scroll cartouche with the coat of arms of the City of London; in less formal language:-
White with the red cross of St George and the red sword of St Paul in the canton.

There is the royal coat of arms of Charles II; but notice how poorly it is engraved, and the motto back to front, as if an apprentice engraver had been given the task.
The mention of a surveyor for a section of the route is not usual.
Printed in a decorative scroll cartouche with fruit and flowers, top centre:-
'The Road from Tinmouth in Northumberld. to the City of CARLISLE in Cumberld. By JOHN OGILBY Esq, his Maties. Cosmographr. Containing 69 Miles 5 Furlongs, viz.'

Overton 1708 printed upper right on the North sheet in a wreath cartouche:-
'A NEW AND EXACT MAP OF GREAT BRITAIN ACCORDING TO THE LATEST AND BEST OBSERVATIONS.'
'To the Most Serene and Most sacred Majesty GEORGE By the Grace of God KING of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, This Map of GREAT BRITAIN is humbly Dedicated & Presented By your Majesties Loyal Subject and Servant, Henry Overton. 1743.'
The 'GEORGE' and 'KING' are clearly replacements. The original edition, 1708, had 'ANNE' and 'QUEEN'. Above the cartouche there is still a portrait of Anne! with a rose and thistle, perhaps a reminder of the Act of Union 1707 between England and Scotland. On the right of the cartouche is Britannia, crowned, seated on a ball, in an ?ermine robe, with orb and sceptre. Neptune with his trident is in the sea below. There are two flags. The Union Flag, in the contemporary version without the diagonal white cross. And a flag carrying the royal coat of arms, of Anne after the union of 1707. The blazon, roughly:-

On the left is the royal coat of arms of the Stuarts; those of James VI and I, the first sovereign of 'Great Britain', when Speed drew the map, and of Charles II when this later edition was published. The blazon is:-

'THE / ILES OF / ORKNAY'
Then a view od:-
'EDYNBURGH'

This is Cunobelinus or Cymbeline, king of the Catuvellauni, recognised as the king of Britain by the Romans about AD5.
Speed 1611 (Wmd) Countie Westmorland ...
The map displays several coats of arms. Upper right, above the title cartouche are the royal arms of James I, with supporters, crests, garter, mottoes, etc.

quarterly 1 and 4 quarterly 1 and 4 azure three fleur de lys or 2 and 3 gules three lions passant guardant or 2 or a lion rampant gules in a double tressure flory counterflory or 3 azure a harp or
This is the old royal arms quartering England and France, quartered with the arms of Scotland and of Ireland. This was introduced by James VI of Scotland who became James I of England, 1603, still a new event when this map was drawn. (The formal union of the two nations was not until 1707.)
The supporters, a lion and unicorn, carry banners with a rose and a thistle respectively.
Printed lower left with the scale line is the coat of arms of:-
