| Many of he royal coats of arms listed under this topic are in churches, where they
declare the loyalty of the congregation to the sovereign as head of the church. Thus
the earliest these coats of arms could be is 1534 in the time of Henry VIII. Many
of the early examples were destroyed on the succession of Mary I, who was catholic;
and new coats of arms were installed in the time of Elizabeth I. The practice of displaying
the royal arms was maintained in the time of the Stuarts. The Archbishop of Canterbury
in 1614, instructed a painter to:- |

| "... survey and paynte in all the churches and chapells within the Realme of England,
the Kinges Majesties Armes in due form, ..." |

| During the Commonwealth, 1649-60, many of the coats of arms were destroyed. At the
Restoration, 1660, there is said to have been a statute requiring the display of the
royal coat of arms in all churches, so many new arms were painted or old ones repaired
I have heard this denied, and have no source reference for the statute). Many old
arms remain unchanged as the sovereign changed but the Hanoverian monarchs, worried
by claims of Stuart pretenders, did cause many to be altered from Stuart arms to Hanoverian
arms - not always very correctly. Dating the arms found in a church is not easy: there
might have been repainting, the royal cypher might be changed, and so on. Churchwarden's
accounts, where costs would be recorded, could be a good source of information. |

| Another common place to find the royal coat of arms, of any period, is on innsigns.
The inn being the Kings Arms, Queens Arms, or whatever. |
